- Designing An Efficient and Effective 911 Control Room: A Case Study
About the client, a police organization: Our client is a police organization that was looking to build a new 911 control center. To support the needs of its population, it employs more than 200 police officers, and provides them with various resources that can address some their local concerns. About the project: The project involved designing and manufacturing a newly renovated 911 control room that could accommodate 10 heavy duty control consoles to offer a more adequate workplace for visitors and employees. This new center would group all the teams who work as part of the police service. The consoles were to be arranged in the following configuration, 10 control consoles setup in 3 rows, leaving enough space for foot-transit inside the control center. 2 consoles would be placed side by side leaving enough space for a storage unit between the 2 consoles. As for the requirements of the specialized furniture, the most important include: 10 dispatcher consoles with a large worksurface area in cockpit shape. Each console should be equipped with 4 CPU enclosures intended for intensive use and include a sliding tray. 4 actuators with a lift capacity of 260 pounds each. High pressure laminate with Greenguard certification. Secure cable management integrated. Integrated power solution. Include a storage cabinet that can fit between 2 consoles. Integrated heating system. Monitor arms compatible with VESA 100x100 mounts that can be adjusted laterally and vertically. Include a status light with a minimum of 2 colors, white and red. About the solution: Our clients chose our heavy-duty consoles to build their modernized 911 control room because they met their specific requirements and could be arranged in their desired configuration to maximize the available space. Our Transit consoles features two large heavy duty work surfaces. A primary and a secondary work surface. Both can be individually height adjusted to fit the operator’s ergonomic needs. The primary worksurface is where the operator can place their keyboards and other utensils. Additionally, the primary worksurface is houses the keypads that control the height adjustments, the heating system and the fans integrated on the worksurface. The secondary worksurface supports the weight of the 3 sturdy monitor arms which can be adjusted to the operator’s desired height and depth. The poles where the monitor arms are mounted, also hold the weight of both the task lamp and the status light. To support the combined weight of both worksurfaces, as well as the constant and intensive use operators will give their control consoles, our furniture is manufactured with a 12-gauge steel substructure. This material ensures its durability and prevents the worksurface from deforming over time. Our consoles have more than enough room to house the required CPUs while leaving room to spare in case our client chooses to add more computers to their setup. The CPU enclosures feature a sliding tray, making it easy to access the IT equipment without causing downtime. Since the substructure is made from steel, al the critical equipment can be secured under lock and key. The CPU enclosures are accessible on the front and the back of the consoles. On the left side of the console, the client can take advantage of the personal storage included. It is the perfect location to keep personal belongings and files. The heating system is located at the bottom of the console, so that when activated, the heat rises and makes the workstation more comfortable during the winter months. To connect the CPUs underneath the console to the monitors mounted on the secondary worksurface, the console features a pathway that allows cable to run alongside the substructure. To provide cable management and secure the cables during motion while the operator adjusts the height of the console, the furniture includes cable chains to protect the equipment. About the result: Our client implemented 10 of our control consoles to create a state-of-the-art control center. Since our consoles are made from steel and high-pressure laminate, they can endure heavy duty use for years to come. With the ergonomic features of our control consoles, our client can provide the operators in the room with a workstation that adapts to their specific needs and requirements. Combining the height adjustability of both work surfaces, and the adaptability of the monitor arms, users can rearrange their console throughout their shift. For example, if the operator wishes to work while standing, they can do so, and the console changes with the push of a button. With the dual work surfaces of the console, operators can take advantage of a wide workspace with enough room to place all their tools. Since the work surface is made from High pressure laminate, users can work without worrying about scratching the surface. Also, with the secondary worksurface, operators don't have to concern themselves with monitor cables getting in the way of their work. The integrated heating system at the bottom of the console, and the fans installed directly on the primary worksurface allow the operators to adjust the temperature at their desired levels. Thanks to the secure cable management our client’s control center ensures their IT equipment stays safe, but also easily accessible to carry maintenance operations. - Designing an ergonomic trading room
About the client Our client is a successful real estate investment company with experience in finance, construction, renovation, asset management and acquisitions & dispositions. They provide expert advice to their clients throughout the US. About the project For their in-house financial team, our client required 5 ergonomic trading desks. They were looking for a comfortable workspace that is clutter-free. Also, they needed a heavy-duty solution that could support at least 6 monitors, featured height adjustability capabilities and integrated cable management into its design. It was also important that the trading room evoked a minimalist aesthetic while also promoting good ergonomic practices. About the solution We designed and built a trading desk that incorporated our client’s requirements. Using a steel substructure our consoles are strong enough to handle the weight of all the equipment used in a professional trading room. As well as ensuring the work surface will remain in good shape for years to come. Our client needed to mount 6 monitors directly on the work surface without compromising the available space for the rest of their equipment. The High-Pressure Laminate work surface supports the weight of the articulated monitor arms and features a grommet at the base for the cables to pass through the surface. To ensure adequate cable management in the trading room our consoles integrate a variety of systems. Underneath the work surface, the power and data cables are routed through the surface frame, and some connect to a power bar. - Renewing a 911 emergency center with future-proof dispatch consoles – Case Study
About the client “There are 1000 calls a day in the Emergency Center.” -Yves Latreille, Operational Unit Leader at the Gatineau 911 Emergency Centre. The Gatineau 911 Emergency Center has 70 employees spread across five teams. During each work period, eight to ten operators are on the floor prepared to answer the 1,000 daily calls the centre receives. About the project Our client required 12 control consoles for its renewed emergency center in the city of Gatineau. These consoles were required to fulfill strict ergonomic guidelines like the APSAM guidelines and were required to be future-proofed so that the center could implement new technologies such as the Next Generation of 911 that is currently being adopted throughout North America. About the solution Our client chose our Transit Series of control consoles to build out its new emergency center. This entailed the design and manufacturing of 12 ergonomic workstations for the primary center that would serve as the backbone of 911 dispatch in the Gatineau region. Our dispatch consoles fulfill the technical and ergonomic requirements since they are built using heavy duty materials. The steel substructure that supports the weight of the equipment and plays a pivotal role in cable management, is made from 12-inch gauge steel. While the dual worksurfaces are made from high-pressure laminate which is scratch, stain and impact resistant. It is a thick material that is also stain resistant and anti-static, creating a durable workstation that stays clean and looks professional. The furniture for this center is designed in the “cockpit” configuration , and each console occupies a footprint of 76 by 76 inches. They feature a double work surface with electric height adjustment, with individual controls that are independent from one another. With its innovative wall system, our consoles offer an efficient cable management solution for data and telephone cables. By routing cables along dedicated electrical raceways, our dispatch consoles maximize access to the interior of the console and reduce obstacles in cable management. Removable panels provide easy access to cables and maintain a clean aesthetic in the center. Contributing to an efficient cable management system is the 12-inch gauge steel substructure underneath the worksurface. Cables run along the substructure from the CPU enclosures all the way to the worksurfaces to power monitors, tools and other IT equipment like the dispatch console. To power the IT equipment, the powerful height adjustability actuators , and the personal environmental systems, there are 3 power bars located underneath the work surface itself, and an electrification system included in the control consoles, enabling 2 separate dedicated circuits of 15A each. The Dual CPU enclosures are big enough for 2 Mid Tower PC’s placed side by side, equipped with steel trays for maintenance, rackmount functionality with ventilation grills. The entire console is industrial grade and manufactured for a 24/7 usage. Including the worksurfaces, the steel underneath and all the accessories. The worksurface can easily support 6 monitors of 24 inches, 4 in the forefront and 2 in the secondary level. These monitor arms are adjustable and future proof, also there is no tool required to make adjustments for the different operators. Adding to the versatility of the system, the worksurface includes a retractable monument port system offering direct access to data and power without having to open the CPU enclosures. This system includes ports for USB, power supply and a special port for the CAT5 network. Each console is equipped with a personal environmental system to control the light intensity, cooling and heating, on the worksurface. This system allows direct and precise control of the 2 task lights with a 4400k with warm and cold light, as well as the cooling fans and the heaters installed on the bottom of the console. All consoles are also equipped with our Console Alert system , which sends a distress call from the console to the supervisor and enhances the center’s crisis management capabilities. This system is connected to a status light (which is itself compatible with the Solacom system), and includes the following colors: white, green, yellow and red. Each one indicates the status of the console: Busy, Alert activated, Administrative phone call and in an emergency call with alert activated. Between every 2 consoles there is a 36 inches space, where the cables run through a shared wall system to help keep a clean environment with superb cable management. This space is also occupied by a small cabinet with 2 drawers for documents and personal items. About the result Using our heavy-duty consoles , 911 telecommunicators can handle an increased amount of emergency calls while working in a comfortable workstation that adapts to the user’s needs.
